takeaways are from the shop... homemade is from the heart.

are you hungry?

I hope you are! As a 4th year student currently completing my studies of food & consumer sciences, I’d love to share with you what I eat and how I eat it! Whether it be a mind-altering snack to get you through your coursework, or something to cure a major hangover after a midweek sesh, I hope I can help get your taste buds tingling.
I like to think of myself as healthy, but sometimes a portion of greasy chips & cheese on my way home from a club can go against that belief. This blog will therefore concentrate mainly on how to fill yourself up with takeaway food that’s homemade, cheap and good for you! I wouldn’t go quite as far as to say I’m a gourmet chef, but I know my way around the kitchen and I love to experiment and try new things. As a full time student with a part time job and a love of going out for a “few” drinks, I need to eat on a budget and make the most of what I cook. Follow my tips on how to do this and you can satisfy your tummy as well as your dancing shoes!

  • Reduced cabinets at supermarkets are a gold mine! You can pick up anything from £1.50 chicken breasts to a 40p bag of veg! Go into your local shop at different times to work out when they reduce most of their stock, and make sure you get there early when they do!
  • Cook together. If you live with other students, plan to eat together a few times a week and you'll notice a difference in your purse, as 4 people chipping in to make spag bol works out cheaper than just 1.
  • Don't fill your freezer with ice cream & vodka jellies! When making things like soup or a curry, make double and freeze the extra portions. This means you can cut down on waste ingredients and have meals at the ready if your pennies won't stretch for food.
  • Practice your puppy eyes! If you go home to visit your parents at weekends, have a look in their fridge and in your best 'helpless & vulnerable' voice, say "Awww I wish my fridge was as full as yours" or try "I wish I had money to buy - fresh fruit/veg/whatever it is you've got your eye on - all the time!" If your parents are as gullible as mine you can be guaranteed to go home with bags bursting of culinary treats.
Now, I could ramble on for some time about myself, and as much as ME is my favourite subject (I promise you I'm not a brat!) I'm sure you would much rather hear about how to make your own chinese/indian/chippy? So have a look, leave a comment and feel free to follow!

- all ingredients should be organic, fair trade and meat free range where possible. If we all do a little bit we can help better the welfare of animals and farmers alike.
- eggs are medium, preferably free range.
- all recipes are to serve 2 people. or 1... if you're really hungry!
